Future Haus – Come In, Kitchen Control

Future Haus Come in, Kitchen Control..

In the house of the future, your kitchen counter is a touch-screen computer. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

Wheeler: With the island in the kitchen, we’ve integrated a touch screen. It’s a multi-touch, so more than one person can use this at one time. You can run different apps, you can check your email, you can research recipes, and with the flip of a hand you can transfer those recipes up onto our countertop, which we call the virtual window.

Joseph Wheeler is the co-director of the Center for Design Research at Virginia Tech. He’s working on a project called Future Haus, building prototypes that will change the way we live indoors.

Wheeler: We’re laminating a thin piece of glass over this, so you can still chop onions. You can still spill milk, but you still get the touch transfer through that thin piece of glass.
For example, when you come here and you sit down and have breakfast in the morning, you can check your news, you can check your email, you can do your text messaging, you can check the morning traffic. Now we’re not reading the news on a newspaper. We’re doing it on a screen now, but it’s in a way where you don’t have to worry about damaging the computer. You don’t spill something on your laptop. You don’t have something in the way. It’s really seamless. I would come to the island and I would research a recipe.
We can Skype grandma in on your kitchen countertop and we can have her walk you through making that recipe, where she can see what you’re doing and you can see her. One thing I like is the prospect that on Thanksgiving Day, you can bring up the different houses that are involved in that big Thanksgiving meal later in the day, and you can communicate with you brothers and your sisters all day long, you know as you cook. Right now, they do the same thing. They’re doing it with phones in their hands. Now it’s almost like a window into other kitchens.

We’ll hear more about Future Haus in our next program. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

Future Haus Come in, Kitchen Control..

In the house of the future, your kitchen counter is a touch-screen computer. I'm Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

Wheeler: With the island in the kitchen, we've integrated a touch screen. It's a multi-touch, so more than one person can use this at one time.
