Sounds can tell us something about a place, including the time of year. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

A familiar sound along the eastern seaboard and elsewhere this time of year, is the call of spring peepers.

Cicadas are a signature sound of a hot summer evening.

Fall is heralded by the call of Canada geese, flying in formation

Here’s a signature winter sound from the Hudson River Valley, where I live it’s an iceboat, skating up a frozen river.

What are the seasonal signature sounds from where you live? Visit our website, pulseplanet.com and check out ‘This Month’s Feature Story’ for instructions on how to send us your seasonal sounds. We plan to select a few of them to air on a future Pulse of the Planet program. If yours is selected, we’ll send you a copy of our Pulse of the Planet CD, which includes over thirty extraordinary sounds. The deadline to send in sounds is March 31st. Go to pulseplanet.com and click on ‘This Month’s Feature Story’.

Pulse of the Planet is presented by the National Science Foundation. I’m Jim Metzner.
